The death has occurred of:
Ivan Campbell
CAMPBELL, Thomas Ivan
Professor Emeritus
Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada
29 August 1940 – 5 January 2024
It is with great sadness that the family of Ivan Campbell announces his peaceful passing at Kingston General Hospital. Survived by Betty (née Ferguson) his beloved wife of 57 years; daughter Kristin and son-in-law James; siblings in Northern Ireland, Maisie, Kathleen, Maureen, Desmond, (and the late George), and his sister-in-law Audrey Ferguson. Uncle Ivan will be sadly missed by his many nephews and nieces around the world.
Ivan was born to the late Thomas and Margaret Campbell in Northern Ireland. He graduated from Queen’s University Belfast with a PhD in 1967. Following graduation, seeking adventure, Ivan and Betty set off for Toronto, Canada. Shortly after arriving Ivan gained employment with the Ministry of Transportation as a Structural Engineer.
In 1972, Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario came calling and Ivan was appointed as an Assistant Professor. By 1990 he had been promoted to Full Professor and became the Head of the Civil Engineering Department from 1990-1995. He was also awarded a Doctor of Science from Queen’s University Belfast in recognition of his extensive research on concrete transportation structures.
Ivan was an avid sportsman playing rugby, tennis, golf, and curling. The highlight of his golfing achievements, apart from his four holes in one, was winning the Ontario Golf Association Father/Daughter Championships with his daughter Kristin in 1994. Following retirement from academic life, Ivan spent many hours on the golf course, both as a player and a competition rules official until failing health curtailed these activities.
Ivan will be remembered as a gentle and quiet man. He was a respected professor, mentor and friend, but above all he was a devoted family man.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation to the teams from St. Elizabeth Health and Bayshore Health for the care they provided to Ivan at home, as well as to all the staff of Connell 9 for their compassion and kindness.
A memorial service will be held at the James Reid Funeral Home (1900 John Counter Blvd. Kingston, Ontario, Canada) on Thursday January 11 at 2 pm. Friends will be received from 1:00 – 1:50 pm prior to the service, with reception to follow.
