NELSON, MARGARET TAYLOR (Née GOYER) 24th May, 1913 - 6th September, 2017, was born in Belfast 104 years ago. The eldest of her siblings, she came into the world ahead of television, the first jet engine, computers, hula hoops, and some might argue, her time.
Margaret, always known as Peg, lived a wonderful life. Her childhood was spent creating cherished memories with her siblings, climbing the hills and taking in the sunshine of the Antrim Coast. Cushendun would forever remain home in her heart. It was the place she learned to speak Irish, and while other memories faded, she could still recite Humpty Dumpty in Irish until the end.
In 1936, Peg married her beloved William La'Coste Nelson, and in 1938 they welcomed their son Blaise into the world. Bill's career as a Merchant Navy captain took them on many travel adventures. In 1948, the family relocated to Montreal, Canada for four years. With Bill often at sea, Peg and Blaise enjoyed all that, La Belle Province, offered, warm friendships, delicious poutine, nights at the ice-rink and a chance to learn French. With Bill's sudden passing in 1952, Peg and Blaise returned to Belfast to carve a new path.
Peg became a career woman, spending years at Short and Harland. She made her mark in what was certainly a man's world at the time, working in the planning department for more than 20 years before retiring with distinction. The following years allowed her to travel with friends and family and to enjoy her extended family in both Northern Ireland and Canada.
Peg was predeceased by her siblings Denis, Rosemary (Desmond) Johnson, Sophie (Bill) Taylor and Tom (Estelle) Goyer. She is survived by her son Blaise (Ann) Nelson of Victoria, British Columbia, grand- daughters Fiona (Kris) Nelson, Tara (Stephen) Nelson, Shannon (Kevin) Evers and great- grandson Alex of Calgary. Also mourning their loss, sister-in-law Estelle (Tom) Goyer, and niece Kerry Goyer of Cushendun, niece Jonnie (Neil) Goyer of Suffolk and great-niece and nephew Molly and Jack Goyer Gorman.
The family would like to extend the utmost gratitude and thanks to the Staff at the Glendun Nursing Home for its exceptional care and love of Peg for the last seven years. Your compassion and professionalism is remarkable, and special thanks to friend Bridget Scally Millar. You have been there when we could not, and we cannot express our appreciation.
