As a writer and an educationalist Sam achieved a great deal for the benefit of this city. He founded the Verbal Arts Centre which helped to establish and support the careers of many other writers. I always found him to be an extremely kind man, generous with his time, and always thinking of ways to improve the community he cared so much for.

Sam was a loyal friend to my father for decades, in good times and in bad, sharing a passion for knowledge and a love of humour. After my father's death, Sam gave me enormous help in ensuring my father's library and research had some ongoing purpose. I am indebted to Sam and his lovely family.

Your dad and Stella were such great friends to our parents Neil and Bronagh. When mum died 2 years ago Sam really took dad under his wing which was much needed, bringing him for lunch and pints and dropping off scallops! He wrote such a beautiful poem on the birth of daughter Farah. Such a wonderful man and a true friend to the Doherty family. We will miss him greatly.

Dear Sarah, Kate and John, so sorry to learn that your Dad has died, but happy that he did not suffer any pain and had you all with him.
With no suitable public transport to get us there on time and with the storm looming we do not wish to drive so we can only be with you all in spirit as you lay Sam to rest with Stella.
We will make a donation to Foyle Hospice.
