The death has occurred of:
Jonnie (Jonathan) ENRIGHT
11th April 2025; passed peacefully at home, whilst reading the Oxford History of the Classical World, and enjoying the view of the Mourne mountains from his window. Late of Fountain Street, Downpatrick – Previously of Northland Road, Derry. Jonnie was the son of Peter and Carmel Enright, the dearly loved brother of Cadogan, Seán, Olwen, Marguerite, Kate and David. Also the beloved cousin, uncle and friend to his many in laws, cousins, nieces and nephews here and around the world.
Jonnie was a man of many parts - an author, poet, musician and historian. He worked with disadvantaged people in London for many years. He valued all people who crossed his path; no one was a stranger to Jonnie. The final paragraph of his poem, “I have decided”, is perhaps his fitting epitaph, and a lesson for us all:
“I’m living in the present, easy day by day,
And enjoying rich baked potatoes, the rare old Irish way,
I may not be rich, I may well be poor,
But if you meet me in the future,
I’ll be happy, that’s for sure”
Service (open to all) at Down Cathedral, English Street, Downpatrick on Thursday 24th April 2025 at 11.30 am. Cremation to follow (private). A further celebration of Jonnie’s life will be held in Ballyheigue, Co. Kerry in August, for his extended family, with a date to be arranged.
