Daddy
Although I cannot see you now,
Or feel your hugs or kiss your brow,
I still can sense you near somehow,
Held safely by our love’s deep vow.
That evening when you slipped away,
Asleep, with nothing left to say,
I kissed your head as you lay,
Heaven’s gates half open that day.
I replay that moment in my mind,
The fading light, the ties unbind,
A memory fixed, forever signed,
A loss no passing time can grind.
I cannot tell you what it meant,
The ache that came when you were sent,
Our family tree now slightly bent,
A branch gone missing, heaven lent.
I miss your hugs, your voice so true,
Your gentle “I love you,” I always knew,
As the spring once in your step withdrew,
The illness slowly stole that too.
I miss your guidance and support,
Your gentle ways of calm resort,
Your hearty laugh in every thought,
Your love of music dearly taught.
I miss our talks of Irish lore,
The tales you told I still adore,
Your wisdom stays forevermore,
A voice I cherish at my core.
A heartbreaking farewell as you reached heaven’s crest,
My pal, my hero, truly the best.
I kissed your head as you found your rest,
A moment forever in my heart pressed.
I hugged you gently, told you you were the best man ever,
I meant each word, every feeling I could gather,
Your selfless love shone in every endeavour,
A goodness so deep it will be forgotten never.
Alas, I need to let you rest
With your beloved Mary, ever blessed.
I miss you both more than words expressed.
